Living life to the fullest

We've all heard this statement before usually spouted by some eggheaded and perky idiot who goes around talking about how one should live life to the fullest. What pisses me off the most is the people who talk about this absolutely nonsensical statement usually live their lives as those portrayed in stupid TV commercials or those read in glossy magazines. The way the media has manipulated and dictated the way so many people live today just confounds me. Are our minds really that easy to be manipulated into thinking we need to do this or do that to actually count as living out our lives? Think about it for a moment, what does living life to the fullest really mean? I mean what do you do? Go around climbing mountains all day long? How many people can actually afford to live life to the fullest? Certainly not me, I can't afford to go on an African safari or climb the Matterhorn. People who actually live life to the fullest are the rich and fortunate ones, most people do as best they can to stay afloat, a lot of people may say it but hardly any of them actually DO it. Live like there's no tomorrow? If today was to be the last day of my life i wouldn't spend my time climbing some stupid ol mountain or whitewater rafting, I would spend it with my family, like every other sensible person would do. But wait, how can spending time with my family be living life to the fullest? Hmmm, it doesn't!! It just goes to show how inherently flawed the statement is! Living life to the fullest aint gonna pay the bills, living life to the fullest aint gonna pay me through university, such overly optimistic and wholly unrealistic statements should never be uttered.

I'd suppose the statement caters to an increasingly hedonistic POV the world tries to throw our way.

But you've got me thinking. If I can take that statement and mould it to my life, what would that be?

And the only thing I can come up with would be leaving more behind than what I take out of life, if(?) and when I eventually leave.

Great post. Keep it coming.

Living life to the fullest actually means climbing mountains, to those who enjoy climbing mountains. To the rest; it simply means finding the things you really enjoy and doing it.

If you're aching to bungee jump, then doing that means a part of living life to the fullest to you. To someone like Mother Theresa, helping other's would be living life to the fullest.

I.E., no regrets in the end.

The reason why people can't "afford" to live life to its fullest (which in my humble opinion means: to do what brings one happiness) is because they feel obliged to do thing society invariably asks of them.

If you enjoy swimming in the sea, who says you need to go to university? Or even pass high-school? Sure, they would HELP and possibly open up more possibilities, but if you want to swim in the sea for as long as it brings you happiness, why can't you? Because we have been brainwashed into living life according to a certain structure. Study, then work, then die. Oh, big whoop...

A very interesting and refreshing post. I just stumbled out of one of those perky blogs a few minutes ago, and not a moment too soon. I was suffocating under all that impractical joy and false goodness.
