Afterlife and its entailments....
My query is not about the existence of the afterlife, but rather why you believe or not believe in it. Personally I do not believe in it at all, I'm fundamentally an atheist with a rather complex form of atheism which will be discoursed in other posts. My main reason for my incredulity of the conept of afterlife is its absurdity. For one thing it has absolutely no ground for it, why should we earn our place in heaven or somewhere else? Why aren't we born equal and good, all ready for eternal life straightaway without the hassle of going through a life of suffering and commiting sins, etc? I do not take the explanation for primal sin an adequate one because quite frankly it is a load of bollocks, and then some. What the hell was the tree in the garden of heaven for? Who would need it in paradise? God? Certainly not, he could quite clearly differentiate between the the already unambiguous sides of good and evil. So quite obviously the only being that would profit from it was man, but even then they were forbidden to eat it, why? Since God is said to know everything, surely he must've known that Adam would disobey his orders. It all seems a bit shoddy don't you think? Neither do I believe in reincarnation although without a bit trepidation as compared with my thoughts on the afterlife. Let's say our soul is born immature, a diamond in the rough, so to speak, and it takes several lives, for the soul to mature and achieve nirvana or satori or whatever. My problem is with the final state, why this? Why should I try to reach it? I think eternal reincarnation with the perk of remembering all our previous lives would be utterly riveting, think of all the lives I would be able to take hold of, being male and female, rich and poor, and a dog too......

People believe in the afterlife for the same reason that people believe in God and Praying and all that nonsense: because it gives them hope.
Religion, in every facet, is a man-made means of giving hope and a goal to work towards, to man himself.
Faith, in retrospect, is stupid. Why would you 'believe' in something you don't know is true? Furthermore (and in the case of Reincarnation) why would you struggle to attain something no one knows exists?
Because, Shebby, it gives people hope. Karma, Heaven and God are nothing but human means of staying connected with something bigger.
Well i understand the function of religion and stuff, in my opinion God is just an excuse for humans to be relieved of their responsibilities, laziness basically. Phrases like its all up to God now, its in God's hands , etc. And you hit the nerve of the issue there farcenal, why why why would people believe in something they know is illogical and furthermore has no proof of its existence, think about it, after working for your entire life preparing for eternal bliss in the afterlife only to find out after taking your last breath afterlife is a load of bollocks, death is as its name implies, the end of existence, you are dead, gone, wiped from the face of the universe. Talk about an otiose life.
wow youre so deep la hansen :S
The question that needs answering is:
If there IS an afterlife, what the hell is the point of, well, current life?
I think the afterlife is veil put up by those who fear death; not the way in which they will die, but the fact that their consciousness will cease. It is a simple truth that the brain stops functioning and there is no means of substituting it. You either live on this earth or you don't live at all. That is what scares them.
The BIGGER problem here is that people are so bound by religion and all that entails it that they spend all their time worrying about the afterlife and how to attain so called heaven or nirvana or whatever it is. They fail to see that this life is the only one that is worth living because that is all we are. we know not about what will happen later, so why worry so much
about it??
and furthermore, i see religion as the basis of all conflicts in the world just because someone thinks that their god is bigger or holier than the other gods. so i suggest that we all renounce religion and live our life as we were want to.
FIGHT THE POWER!!
*end of madness*
